Recent years have seen a blossoming of impressive reprints of comics’ glorious past. Unfortunately, in the decades between the comics’ initial publication and the present day, many of the materials needed to reprint them—original artwork, printers’ negatives, plates, etc.—were lost or destroyed. That’s where digital restoration comes into its own: using a copy of the comic as printed, it is now possible to scan the antique pages into a digital format and extensively repair any print defects and age-related deterioration. The final result is a file of near-pristine image quality that can be used in the reprint process and bring those classic comics back to life…
